Saturday, April 20 – 9 AM – 8th Annual State Clean Sweep —Join us for an early Earth Day (April 22) at Montezuma Heritage Park at the High Street Trailhead Kiosk.  Volunteers will help Spring Clean the Park.

Saturday, May 4 – 2 PM – Park Appreciation/Dedication Day We will MuralHechtdedicate the park’s new historic mural, roadside markers and park enhancements. This special day will recognize our “Star” funders, partners, and dedicated volunteers that made it all possible. A guided walking tour will follow the dedication to highlight the park’s newly marked trails and Erie Canal sites.

PathThruHistorylogoSaturday, June 2 – 2 PM – Montezuma Historical Society Annual Meeting and Roadside Marker Dedication – The event will join with other museums across New York State to celebrate the significance of historic sites and our rich cultural heritage to give a deeper appreciation of our past. The William G. Pomeroy Foundation funded the new roadside marker that highlights the significance of the Historic Mentz Church to our community which was founded in 1825.

Following the dedication there will be an ice cream social on the church lawn.

Wednesday, July 24 –  MHS  One-Day Historic Canal Cruise  A very special chartered Midlakes Navigation boat tour will start in Seneca Falls for a leisurely seven-hour cruise down the Seneca River/Barge Canal. Captain Dan Wiles will share interesting canal facts and historic information along the way. A continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack will be served. An Onondaga Motor Coach will transport the group back to Seneca Falls. Call 315-776-4656 for more information.

Sunday, July 28, 2 PM – One Room School House Remembrances – We are inviting former students of one-room school houses from area communities to share their stories as we remember what is was like to attend a neighborhood one-room school.  An Ice cream social will follow.

CanalSplashSaturday, August 10 – 9 AM Canal Splash Following the Flow Historic Walking Tour—Historic sites tour by Mike Riley, Canal Historian. The tour will start at the Town Hall and then begin a walk to historic sites in the Montezuma Heritage Park. The tour will feature newly marked nature trails and stops to the remains of Clinton’s Ditch Lock 62, the  Richmond Aqueduct, Paper Mill, Meil’s Dry Dock, and Lock 11 along the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. A dish-to-pass lunch at the Lock Street pavilion will follow. Music will be provided by the Muckland Crooners. More information about Mike’s historic walking tours can be found at:

Following the picnic there will be an update on the master plan concepts being developed through an EPF grant helping the town to partner with the landscape architect firm, edr companies and the Center for Community Design and Research at SUNY ESF. Special funding for this event was received from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

SallysStoryImageSunday, September 15, 2 PM – at Historic Mentz Church — Sally’s Story – A Premier Readers’ Theatre Presentation – from a play written by Mary McCall Riley of Port Byron  based on a short story she wrote in 2012. The story around the play is a historical fiction drawn from newspaper articles researched by her husband, Mike Riley, Town of Mentz Historian.  In Sally’s story, Mary uses facts about life in the Town of Montezuma, New York,  to interweave a mysterious story from the early 1900’s Canal Era with Sally’s own life and her family’s demise.

5K LOGOSaturday, October 12 – Montezuma Aqueduct 5K Run/Walk – The First Annual 5K Run/Walk was created to celebrate our Erie Canal Heritage and provide an enjoyable place to run or walk in a beautiful natural setting. The park’s development has been an all volunteer, grass-roots effort to help our community and preserve our natural and historic resources.

The event starts at 9 AM and following the adult race/walk there will be a special Children’s Heel and Tow race. The Fireman’s Auxillary and Thurston, Schramm, Reynolds Veterans Post will have a Chicken BBQ.
